The Hostel is based in an old Georgian house (one of the oldest in the town) built in the mid 1700's. Before it became The Green Door it was a Bed and Breakfast, a school, and a private residence. The front of the building has got some fine views of the town while the back of the building has a small outdoor area with a barbeque (courtesy of Heiko who was a receptionist here in 2007). We're working on the garden (slowly). It's taking its time because we installed a wood pellet burner to heat the hostel and this burner has also been "planted" in a small wooden shed in the same garden. The wood pellet burner is a carbon neutral system of providing heating and hotwater (and a hell of a lot cheaper than oil). We have also replaced most of our bulbs with energy saving bulbs and have introduced a paper recycling bin to try and increase our recycling and overall energy awareness. The trouble with an old building is that it's bloody hard to maintain so more often than not, you'll probably see some tradesman or other doing some necessary repair work on the building. This has to be done delicately as the building is protected so it's a it costly and slow but the place has great charm so we feel it's all worth it in the end. We have a good mix of rooms, dormitories and private rooms with and with out showers, |
