The Green Door Accomodation
Things to see

Drogheda (where The Green Door is) has the great advantage of being close to Dublin, on the main road between Dublin and Belfast, and is a 30 minute or 45 minute (depending on the bus you take) bus journey between here and Dublin airport. Find directions and travel information here.

The town has very good bus links with Dublin, Belfast, Dundalk, Slane, Navan, Ardee, Brú na Bóinne, Monasterboice, Laytown, Bettystown and Baltray and as a result is perfect for a backpacker who doesn't have a car.

Drogheda is smack bang in the middle of one of the most historical parts of Ireland. It is situated at the mouth of the Boyne River, 10 minutes bus journey from Brœ na B—inne (the visitor centre for Newgrange and Knowth), and 10 minutes bus journey from Monasterboice (now a graveyard, but was a very early monastery with some wonderfully carved high crosses and a round tower). Mellifont Abbey (a 15 minute car journey from Drogheda) was a Cistercian Monastery where the treaty was signed between the Gaelic chieftains and the English Monarchy which effectively ended any chance of the restoration of the Gaelic Aristocracy in Ireland and resulted in the oft talked about Flight of Earls.

A 35 minute bus journey to Slane will enable you to visit the Hill of Slane while Tara and Trim are more easily accessible by car (both within an hours drive from Drogheda).

The Battle of the Boyne Interpretative Centre has just opened. It is situated just 3km from Drogheda in Oldbridge House. It's the scene of Ireland's largest battle and it involved several European countries. It was a battle between Catholic and Protestant and it is still celebrated by The Orange Order to this day.
